Book Reviews - The First Book of the Dark Goddess |

"This book, The First Book of the Dark Goddess is one of the best books I have ever read, which deals completely with the Divine Mother and Her history. I highly recommend it to every woman who is awakening to the power of the Goddess within. This is one book I will cherish and study for years to come." Tara Imani Williams, Goddess Artist/Historian "Finally! A Wonder Book on the Dark Goddess for Y2K! This is a wonder book! It makes clear much of the Kush traditions. After reading other books of the Goddesses of other traditions which was also satisfying, it is refreshing to read about the African Goddesses of my heritage and origin. I highly recommend this book for those like me that are seekers of learning. I do not recommend it however for those with close minds. I find it amazing that this book has come into my life just in time. I have been searching for just such book as this. While reading the book it is obvious to me that this book was ten years in the making. It is of a very high quality.” Jeanine De Oya-author of the book, Portal into the Light of Truth: The First Book of Wicca for African Americans. "Your book, The First Book of the Dark Goddess is outstanding." Empress Fiyah Goddess Researcher and Writer "It is an extraordinary work which attests to the power of the oral tradition, particularly when combined with a great deal of learning. The book reminds me of Drusilla Dunjee Houston, Wonderful Ethiopians of the Ancient Cushite Empire, first published in 1926, whose research and insights have been confirmed today by geneticists, archaeologists, and cultural historians. I am particularly happy to have found your Black Goddess book because it confirms major themes of my own work." Lucia Chiavola Birnbaum, Core Faculty, Women's Spirituality, California Institute of Integral Studies "One in every personal library!! This is a must read and must own. Finally a book placing the Dark Goddess in her proper place in Herstory, at the beginning where she rightfully belongs. This book also documents that ancient Africa was the birth place of civilization and not what we were taught in school. There is a wealth of information at your finger tips. It also invites/encourages you to do some exploring on your own. Thanks Matomah, great job!" Jocelyn Morris Cool Wolf |

There are many books on Goddesses from around the world, but very few writers and researchers have done much work on black Goddesses from Africa, Asia and Southern Europe. Matomah Alesha is an American with an interest in native culture, ancient mythology and Goddess folklore and her book is written with a passion to tell the story of the first African Mother-Goddess and her manifestations in other cultures and places. Matomah Alesha is a poet and artist as well as a researcher, so her book is full of ideas and enthusiasms as much as information and facts, and she weaves a spiraling story of black Goddesses of creation, fertility, love, earth and elemental powers, drawn from a wide range of material, including native customs and belief systems, and modern science and genetics. Along the way she looks at the role of women in African society, the evidence for matrilineal cultures, and the significance of blackness. The book is thus something of a helter-skelter ride, but always rooted in her love for the Great Mother Goddess and Her significance for people all over the world. This book is not easy to obtain, but its worth the effort for the amount of diverse material it contains and its originality. My review copy had no illustrations, but the book itself does include quite a number, which are doubtless very worth having. Goddess Alive - United Kingdom Whitewaves, Boscaswell Village, Pendeen, Penzance, Cornwall TR19 7EP This fine book is the result of incredible research and awesome dedication by the author. Certainly a joy to read with her flowing style of writing....... Matomah Alesha has a warm talent that keeps you from putting the book aside.. This study of the Dark Goddess covers some 75 thousand years of history and far too much has been ignored and far too long. Then come; join in with the author as she takes us on an epic journey thru time and find enrichment in your own life...... A must read ; must own book ! Certifiably the most intriguing work reviewed in 3 decades. Harvey Macklin 18 August 2005 |
